Best Paving Materials

Posted on

When you are going to lay down pavement for a parking lot, you really only have two choices. You can either pave with concrete or asphalt. Each of these materials has benefits and downsides, but they are both widely used and extremely good materials. While both are great materials, this article is going to focus on the benefits of paving with asphalt. So, here are just a few of the benefits you will see when paving with asphalt.

The Aggregate

The main components of asphalt are a rock aggregate and bitumen. Aggregate is starting to get a lot of attention from engineers and geologists. They are discovering that the higher quality the aggregate the higher quality the asphalt can be. Any rock used to be used for aggregate, but it has been found that the rock used should be very non-porous. Porosity in rocks is simply the space between crystals. If there is a lot of space between the crystals, water is able to get into the pores. When water freezes, it expands and will start to break down the rock. So the aggregate that is being put into the asphalt today is very high quality aggregate and just adds to the overall longevity of the material.

Freeze Thaw Cycles

The overall engineering of asphalt has allowed it to take diverse weather conditions very well. The bitumen and the aggregate in the asphalt allow the material to go through freeze thaw cycles considerably well. Materials will swell up when heated and contract when cool. This can be very hard on rigid materials. Asphalt has just enough flexibility to make it capable of flexing with the adverse weather conditions. Weather does not have as much affect on asphalt as it does with many other paving materials.

One major benefit of have asphalt is that it is relatively easy to fix. Over time the asphalt is going to crack and chip, but that is to be expected. One of the best attributes of asphalt is that it is easy to fix. You can go to almost any home improvement store and find a sealcoat or a polymer crack filler. This is going to fill in the cracks and prolong the life of your asphalt. If you absolutely have to re-finish the surface, the asphalt can act as the foundation of the new asphalt. Re-finished asphalt can last for a very long time.
